Rosalba gets to Venice mostly by accident but partly by design. A middle-aged housewife on vacation with her husband and teen-age sons, she gets left behind at a rest stop, when not even her husband notices that she hasn’t returned to the tour bus.
Instead of waiting for someone fetch her; she hitches a ride that will go past her town on its way to Venice — a city that she has never visited. “I never get any time at home alone,” she says, but maybe a vacation alone is even better. She stays with her ride, and goes on to Venice. The beauty, together with her new-found freedom, keep her from leaving.
